Big Brass Bed began in 2002 when it appeared at Lake Worth’s Bamboo Room as a Bob Dylan cover band, prompting the Palm Beach Post to call it “a rolicking blend of blues, folk, country, and other roots-loving styles…(and) when the singer approached the mike, you could make out the lyrics.” After three albums and fourteen years of clubs, street fairs, community events and festivals, New Times named Big Brass Bed “South Florida’s Best Folk Band of 2016” with its electric lineup.

The band’s two original members, singer-guitarist Rod MacDonald and drummer Bill Meredith, are joined by a formidable lineup of Palm Beach County veterans: lead guitarist Mario LaCasse is a virtuoso rock and funk soloist who’s traveled with Copland Davis and The Groove Merchants; keyboardist Brad Keller, with a jazz pedigree, has toured with Maynard Ferguson and played the Montreux Jaxx Festival; and bassist Doug Lindsay has anchored several popular area bands for thirty years.

Big Brass Bed features three vocalists, and is so versatile that it also appears as the concert band “Rod & The Humdingers” for FAU’s LLS program, where they’ve given entire concerts of The Songs of Ray Charles & Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton & Van Morrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Birth of Rock & Roll, and others. And they still play Dylan—MacDonald is a featured artist at annual Dylan festivals in the northeast US---from his folk years to his recent work, arranged to suit the band.

Big Brass Bed also performs some of MacDonald’s work. A nationally-known singer-songwriter with numerous songs covered by other artists, his 14th album, Rants And Romance, was released in June 2023 and spent several weeks in the top ten on national folk dj charts. As a lead singer, he’s done 40 tours of Europe and festivals throughout the US, Europe and Australia, and was named one of the “Ten Greatest South Florida Folk Singers of All Time” by New Times.
